Dealing with your lender or servicer: Student loan
I am writing to formally request a full discharge of my student loans serviced by Nelnet due to years of misleading guidance, improper loan servicing, and the significant financial harm that resulted from their actions. As someone who pursued higher education to better myself, advance my career, and create opportunities to serve my community, taking on student loan debt was an investment I made in good faith. I earned advanced education to build a career in healthcare leadership and business, with the goal of creating stability for myself while also helping others. I trusted that my loan servicer would provide accurate information and guide me toward repayment options that were in my best interest. Instead, my experience with Nelnet has been deeply disappointing and financially devastating. Throughout the years, rather than being properly educated on income-driven repayment options or forgiveness pathways that may have made my payments manageable, I was repeatedly steered toward forbearance and deferment. At the time, I relied on the information I was given and believed I was making responsible decisions. I was never fully informed of the long-term consequencesparticularly how interest would continue accruing and then capitalize, causing my balance to grow substantially. Because of this, my student loan debt became increasingly overwhelming. Instead of making meaningful progress toward repayment, I watched my balance rise far beyond what I originally borrowed. This created a cycle of debt that became harder and harder to escape. The financial burden has affected every area of my life. As a woman in the healthcare professional and entrepreneur, I have worked tirelessly to build a meaningful career and create financial security. I have carried significant responsibilitiesnot only professionally, but personally. I have invested in building businesses, serving vulnerable populations, and creating resources for seniors and families in my community. Yet despite years of hard work, these student loans have remained a heavy burden that continues to limit my financial freedom. The harm caused extends beyond the loan balance itself. I also have serious concerns regarding Nelnets reporting of my payment history to credit bureaus. Inaccurate, misleading, or harmful reporting has negatively impacted my credit profile, which has affected my ability to fully leverage financial opportunities, secure favorable lending terms, and build long-term wealth. As someone who understands finance and lending, I fully appreciate how damaging inaccurate credit reporting can be. What makes this especially painful is that I acted in reliance on the guidance provided by Nelnet. I trusted them to act ethically and transparently. Instead, I now believe that trust was misplaced. The financial strain has been accompanied by emotional and mental stress. Carrying inflated debt caused by poor servicing practices creates a constant burdenone that affects peace of mind, future planning, and overall well-being. There have been many moments of frustration, disappointment, and discouragement knowing that the debt I have carried for years may have been significantly reducedor even forgivenhad I been properly advised from the beginning. I believe I was failed by the very system that was supposed to help borrowers succeed.
