Fees or interest: Credit card
I am filing a complaint regarding American Expresss handling of late fees, service failures, and negative credit reporting. A small balance became past due after multiple service issues and inconsistent information from American Express representatives. Instead of helping resolve the issue, American Express immediately added late fees that were disproportionate to the underlying balance. I contacted American Express multiple times to dispute the proportionality of the fees and to request written documentation of their determination. Each time, I was denied escalation, denied documentation, and told I had to pay first before anyone would review the issue. No representative would provide a written explanation of how the fees were calculated or why they were considered appropriate. I made a goodfaith payment to bring the account current, but American Express continued to add fees and report negative information to the credit bureaus without addressing the underlying dispute. I eventually received a letter from the Executive Office, but it did not address the issues I raised. It did not address the late fees, the proportionality of the fees, the service failures, the refusal to escalate, or the negative credit reporting. It was a generic denial that did not reflect any investigation into my dispute.I am filing a complaint regarding American Expresss handling of late fees, service failures, and negative credit reporting.
